While Stoko products are a steal of a deal when compared to the cost of a traditional knee brace, we all know that financial support on big purchases is always welcome. Which is why we are happy to report that most insurance carriers in Canada and the U.S. will provide reimbursement for all Stoko products. If you’re in the market to purchase a Stoko product, we took the time to answer a few questions that you may have about claiming them for reimbursement.

What level of certification do Stoko products carry?

The K Line are both registered as Class 1 Medical Devices through Health Canada and the FDA. Our products come highly recommended by physiotherapists and orthopedic surgeons looking for a more compliant knee brace that supports active rehabilitation. 

How do I determine if I can claim K1 or K1 Breathe as a medical expense with my insurance provider?

Stoko products are eligible for reimbursement through Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) and Flex Benefit Plans by all Canadian insurers, as well as some carriers in the U.S. As for general benefits plans, our customers have experienced many cases of reimbursement but coverage is dependent on the insurer as benefit plans vary. We recommend reviewing the details of knee brace coverage in your unique benefits plan to determine exactly what and how much is covered. If you’re still unclear on the coverage, reach out to your provider to get more information.

What steps do I need to take to ensure my claim is approved?

First you will need to obtain a prescription for the K1 from your medical professional. The referral should include the following:

  • Specific injury diagnosis that the K1 is being prescribed for. Here is Stoko's sample prescription form that can be filled out by your medical professional.
  • Recommendation of K1 for injury rehabilitation and daily use (important note: insurers will not cover knee braces for sports purposes only).

Next, be sure to include a detailed receipt of purchase along with your prescription when submitting your claim. Detailed receipts can be obtained by contacting support at hello@stokodesign.com. What if I don’t have an extended health benefits plan?

While you are not eligible for a reimbursement if you do not have any extended health benefits, we still have some good news for you. When compared to a custom rigid knee brace, which generally range from $1,000 - $2,000, Stoko K Line products offer an affordableand much more comfortable and functionalalternative. Not only that but all Canadians, who have not claimed a Stoko product under an extended health benefits plan, are able to claim the product as a medical expense when filing a tax return. Our products qualify under the braces for a limb category outlined by the CRA.
